Description
Mechanical / Master Use Licenses
(For reproducing music on physical/digital media or using specific recordings.)
If you want to use a song in a TV or radio commercial, you need a Master Use license from the label (unless you are re-recording the performance) and a Synchronization license (TV) and/or a Transcription license (radio) from the publisher.
-
Mechanical (reproduction) is typically statutory (e.g., statutory rate ~$0.091 per copy, but can vary).
- Master Use (label’s recording right) is negotiated similar to sync (often similar range). *Using a specific sound recording
- Similar range to Sync; Highly variable depending on the artist and use case.
- Primary Master Use License:Â While not always discussed alongside the other core licenses, if you intend to use the specific recorded version of a song (i.e., the master recording), you need a master use license. This is separate from the synchronization license, which covers the composition. The master use license is typically obtained from the record label or whoever owns the rights to the specific recording. Master use fees also vary significantly, dependent on artist popularity and use case.
- This is a 1 Yr. Master Use License Contract – Details of the contract will be discussed before full payment submission. This is a standard booking payment for a Master Use License for a 1 Yr period. Annual cost varies by content, popularity of content and what you are using the music for. A Standard Music License for Commercials; $750/mo. indefinitely for the contract period. This is a standardized cost. Specific content pricing will be higher depending on the content and the details for usage.
